The first few chapters I read aloud to my girlfriend as we lay in bed. Their copy was checked out but I notcied a beautifully bound book nearby, acquired by the library in 1925 but probably printed before that. So, a few weeks ago, while I was looking for The Scottish Himalayan Expedition in the McGill library, and when I had some time to kill, I went to find The Lion, The Witch, and the Warddrobe so that I could read about Narnia again, as it was all snow outside and I wanted to imagine Mr Tumnus walking by. I’ve read Phantastes and Lilith, too.īut I had somehow never read The Princess and the Curdie. I have a tattoo on my inner left forearm of a hammer, based on Curdie’s mattock (something I don’t mention very often, because who reads George Macdonald anymore?). The miner’s beast, bathing his hands in a fire made of roses, his ability to sense the animal inside the humans at court - the story has forever shaped how I read not only fantasy, but also the world. The kind Domovoi, who protects their home. Vasya has grown up playing with the creatures of her village. Goodreads Review and Updates Goodreads Description I actually ended up picking this one up my very last day at work, when it was literally blizzarding outside so it definitely fit the mood, and it made leaving the job I’ve been at for the past 3 years feel a little better. It was well deserving of a five-star review. So I bought it, and I’m so glad I did because this was one of the best books I’ve read in a while. I love books that are scenic and atmospheric so I was really hyped to get into this one, and I was at Barnes and Noble with my friend Rachael the other day and decided that even though I didn’t really have the money for it, I wasn’t going to leave the store without it. I had been hearing about this book around booktube, and everyone seemed to have good things to say about it and I decided I wanted to find out for myself. This is my spoiler-free review of the Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. This includes, but is not limited to, hate speech and fighting about politics. Winner of the 2020 Audie Award for Best Male Narrator Tolkien‘s books are not just a source of entertainment, they are a work of art. However, the ring was eventually lost and found its way into the hands of a hobbit named Frodo Baggins, who embarked on a perilous journey to destroy it and defeat Sauron. He created the One Ring, which would allow him to control the other rings and dominate Middle-earth. Sauron, a powerful and malevolent being, sought to claim the power of the Rings of Power, which had been crafted by the Elves. He was eventually defeated by the Elves and the Valar, their angelic allies, but his legacy lived on in the form of his lieutenant, Sauron. Morgoth, the Dark Lord, rose to power and sought to dominate the world. However, the peace of Middle-earth was not to last. The Elves, a noble and wise race, were the first to awaken in Middle-earth, followed by the Dwarves, a hardy and industrious people. Eru Ilúvatar then brought forth the Ainur, a group of angelic beings, who helped him shape the world.Īs time passed in Middle-earth, various factions rose and fell, each leaving their mark on the world. It all began with the creation of the universe, called Eä, by the supreme being known as Eru Ilúvatar. The history of Middle-earth is a fascinating one, full of twists and turns, triumphs and tragedies. It is a vast, complex world, rich in history and mythology. To appreciate the books fully, it is essential to have a good understanding of the Lord of the Rings universe. Understanding the Lord of the Rings Universe I could not believe how many people he conned into being involved with this project. Jeff also literally knows everyone in the world. Not only are they amazingly creative, they’re also just fun to work with (very few of my authors respond to my emails with “SQUEEEE.” It’s refreshing.). Working with Jeff and Selena was a dream. Someone needed to step in as editor, and as a lover of science fiction and fantasy, I jumped at the chance. A colleague had acquired it, and only a few months later had to leave the company. I feel lucky to have been involved in this project, because I came to this book in a fairly roundabout way. Since working on the book, I’ve been to Steampunk events, I spotted Steampunks at Comic-Con (my favorite was the Steampunk Boba Fett), and I’ve been introduced to some amazing writers and artists who I hope to work with in the future. As always happens when I get involved in a new project, I suddenly find myself completely immersed in that world. Chambers, available May 1 ( pre-order now!). I’m super excited for the publication of The Steampunk Bible by Jeff VanderMeer and S. There wasn’t any conscious set up for Queen of Rhodia, if I’m honest. He took the scene breakdown I’d given him and brought it all to life, adding lots of new ideas and elements along the way. I actually wrote quite an in depth scene breakdown - just outlining the basic beats per scene - but wanted to introduce more writers to Class rather than write myself, hence handing it over to Alfie. So it struck me an examination hall would be the perfect setting: all the characters are present, but nobody’s allowed to talk! Ideal for audio (mad, I know) - or at least what I needed. It had to be a story that focussed on Quill and Charlie (with maybe only one other main voice in the form of The Cleaver), but I wanted these new volumes to feature the other characters as much as possible. Ha! A bit like Tell Me You Love Me, it was pretty much defined by production restrictions. |
